Caspar de Crayer
(Antwerp 1584 – 1669 Gent)
Christ with the crown of thorns, oil on canvas, 98 x 77 cm, framed,
Caspar de Crayer was probably the most important church painter of his time. He only rarely painted secular works or portraits. Thus this high quality, evocative work depicting the Redeemer may be accorded great importance. De Crayer studied Italian Renaissance precedents, the influence of which, alongside that of this colleague, Rubens is tangible in this image. Thieme-Becker writes that Crayer could barely have ranked alongside Rubens in terms of the number of his works, ‘without having recourse to competent assistants like these.’
